Job Overview
Join our dynamic team as an Underground Utility Laborer and be a vital part of infrastructure development and maintenance! In this energetic role, you’ll assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems, including water and sewer. Your hands-on work will help ensure safe, reliable utility services for communities. Duties
- Assist with directional boring, digging trenches, and excavations using hand tools and machinery under supervision
- Load, unload, and organize materials and equipment needed for utility installation projects
- Follow safety protocols diligently to prevent accidents during excavation and utility work
- Support the installation of underground waterlines for residential and/or commercial projects, and conduits according to project specifications
- Help with site cleanup and prepare work areas for inspection or further construction activities
- Collaborate with team members to ensure project timelines are met efficiently
- Perform routine inspections of tools and equipment to maintain safety standards
Tasks
- Dig and shore trenches to the specified depth and width for water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer installation
- Place, join, and backfill pipe sections for underground utility systems under the direction of a Foreman or Operator
- Set and grade gravel bedding and compactable fill material to meet project specifications for pipe support
- Assist operators in setting up and guiding equipment during boring and excavation operations, including spotting and hand signaling
- Set and monitor trench boxes, shoring, and spoil piles in compliance with OSHA excavation safety standards
- Operate hand compactors and plate compactors to achieve the required compaction rates in backfilled areas
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site by removing debris, stockpiling materials, and securing tools at the end of the shift
- Support traffic control setup and breakdown at job sites, including placement of cones, signs, and barriers per the approved traffic control plan
- Assist with installation and connection of fire hydrant assemblies, water service taps, and meter pits
- Perform general earthmoving tasks in support of grading, site preparation, and erosion control operations as directed
Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, digging, and standing for extended periods
- Strong attention to safety procedures and a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment
- Good communication skills to follow instructions clearly and work effectively within a team
- Willingness to learn new skills related to underground utility installation and maintenance
- Basic understanding of construction site safety practices is a plus
- Reliable work ethic with punctuality and dependability at the forefront
